“She’s mystery,” says Jeffrey Fitzgerald about Brackish Sweetheart.
Fitzgerald is a Maine artist and calls the beautiful town of Ogunquit home. There he is surrounded by the unique waters, known as brackish water. Where the river meets the ocean, the waters blend, swirl and swell to create something truly engaging.
“I spied last summer’s leaves in flux, the river’s freeloaders making their way downstream. The vines and ivy, suctioned and wrought, fully adorned to a big trunk,” says Fitzgerald. “The seaweed was circling and even a periwinkle and a pebble were afloat.” This salt water spin caught his eye. “I look to bring these things together in Brackish Sweetheart. The painting is about growth and water caught in a spiral. It is the brew of river life meeting the sea.”
Fitzgerald, who works mostly in acrylics, finds the physical and emotional energy of the ocean and coastline. His paintings find a balance, story, and power between the creative process and the world as he sees it.
“This painting is about process and story along and among events. I endlessly break the day into compositions. Those ephemeral moments become working paintings,” say Fitzgerald. “It is much more than infatuation, the tug of desire to conjure tactile objects and places. Brackish Sweetheart is driven by gesture and color, but also by medium, brushstroke and negative space.”
