Ingunn Milla Joergensen – The Choice Show 2021

“All my work in this year’s show is of landscapes. Wide and open ones. They vary from dawn to dusk, rivers, marsh, and ocean,” explains artist Ingunn Milla Joergensen. “I spend a lot of time in these various places. It is where I can breathe, reflect, and find peace. This last year these aspects are more important than ever, to recharge and find beauty in nature. “

Joergensen chose Early Morning Reflection #2  as her  Artist Choice piece.  “I love the freshness of a new day, a new beginning. All is shimmering, quiet, and beautifully soft,” she says, “just filled with peace, light, and possibilities.”

THE CHOICE SHOW  2021

Christine Brenner – The Choice Show 2021

Christine Brenner

Despite spending seven or eight months a year traveling in the U.S. and abroad, Maine retains a particularity that hasn’t been rivaled. The Mediterranean coastlines of Spain and Italy are enchanting, and the Atlantic coast of Morocco is spectacular, but Maine has a taste all its own.

Although I revel in the sight of the sea, it’s the Maine light that grabs me. The uncluttered skies hint at the smell of brine, mussels, seaweed, lobster, fish, ducks, and birds. Salty marshes, mysterious dunes, or the sea itself inhabit the lower edge of the painting and gently hold the sky and its moods for our contemplation. The briny sea air, the changing moon, a star, chartreuse morning mist, a lone tree contorted by the challenges of untamed weather are the elements that inspire my work.

Painting and Maine are inseparable!

The Janis H. Sanders’ Spring Show at Maine Art Hill

Over the last few years, the blues and yellows belonging to artist Janis Sanders have become familiar and sought after. The perfect sky and stunning landscape of New England are both honored in his work and celebrated on his canvas.

Beginning Saturday, May 8, artist Janis Sanders’ new works are to be showcased at The Gallery on Maine Art Hill at 14 Western Avenue in Kennebunk.

Sanders says, “Each of my works is done as spontaneously as possible, with only minimal blocking in of forms. I paint vigorously, expressively, and physically, applying paint with a palette knife in areas of color, then smoothing and blending minimally to keep the paint fresh.”

Sanders is an accomplished oil painter who has won awards for his distinctive painting style. He melds elements of American Realism with Modernism/Impressionism for a dramatically contemporary visual result. Many of Sanders’ paintings are done outside or  “en plein air,” a method introduced by French artists, which means “open-air.”

“I feel the day, the sky, the atmosphere, and the sun on things, just as I did as a kid, with the same amazement and awe and wonder,” he says. “I try to convey that moment of joy and presence through the scenes of my paintings without intention for nostalgia or sentimentality. Whether it is a farm in a pasture with a working barn or a lobster shack along a wharf, the sense of place is real.”

A landlocked kid raised in upstate New York, Sanders grew into a true New Englander and continually celebrated its beauty through his work. His strong linear shapes of buildings and rooflines stand solid in contrast to the natural curves of land and sea. All are illuminated by sunlight casting gently across the varied surfaces.

“I begin each painting with the sky; to me, the most important element,” says Sanders. “The sky is light. We are immersed in it. It’s the key to determining the entire atmosphere of the painting. Visually and practically, it provides the backdrop for the other objects in view,” says Sanders. “I paint those blue skies, each one new, each one fresh from the gut.”

The Janis H. Sanders’ show opens at The Gallery on Maine Art Hill, 14 Western Avenue, on Saturday, May 8, at 10 am. The show runs through Thursday, May 27, and is open daily at 10 am. FMI call 207-967-2803 or visit www.maine-art.com/shows.

LETS VOTE! 10th Annual Choice Show Voting

VOTING BEGINS MONDAY APRIL 26

But first, a bit about the show …

On May 29, Shows on Maine Art Hill at 5 Chase Hill Road opens for the summer with the 10th Annual Choice Art Show, the only show curated by you. This is our tenth year. WOW!  Fourteen Artists, including 5 Gallery Alumni. Forty-two works. We always love seeing your choices.

Remember, voting begins on April 26th!

For the last few years, we have opened our summer season with the Choice Art Show.  This year is no different. However, the 10th Annual Choice Art Show will officially open a week earlier on Saturday, May 29, and we are changing it up just a little. We are celebrating a bit of our past with a bit of our present. Why not. We have been doing this now for a decade.

Stay tuned here for the Online Preview on May 26 and the Virtual Tour on May 28.

For those new to Choice and a recap for the veterans, we begin with eighty-four original works from fourteen artists, six pieces each.  It is then narrowed down to three pieces from each artist. These three are carefully “chosen” to be in the show. This is where it gets fun.  One piece, The Artist’s Choice, the artist chooses. The Designer’s Choice is chosen by the designer, and local celeb, Louis Hurlbutt of Hurlbutt Designs.  And then there is the third and final choice, The People’s Choice.

The People’s Choice is all up to you. By casting your vote for your favorite piece from each artist, you decide the last fourteen paintings to be featured in this kickoff show.  Each and every artist represented in the show is one of the very best in the area. You can trust that no matter which piece you choose, many others will be in complete agreement.

Remember, voting begins on April 26th and closes on May 26th

There is a link at the bottom of this blog to click to start your voting process.

Upon clicking, you will be directed to the 10th Annual Choice Art Show page. Here you begin voting.  Each screen shows the six paintings each artist has submitted.  All you have to do is tell us which one you love most by clicking it and then clicking  VOTE.  Once you decide, the site will show you what other voters liked and then move you forward to the next artist.

Watch for our Facebook, Instagram, website, and email updates to announce the People’s Choice winners.

As of this moment, no one knows exactly what the show will look like. Will your favorite make it to the walls of the gallery?  Come in and find out. The show is open until Thursday, June 10.  Remember – if you can’t find the piece you fell in love with, visit the Artist’s Page on our website or The Gallery at 14 Western Ave. All the works are far too beautiful not to showcase somewhere at Maine Art Hill, so they will be on display at one of our locations once the show opens.

We look forward to seeing you soon and happy voting!

Lone Penguin, 4.5×2.5×3 in, Bronze

James Rivington Pyne was educated in Massachusetts and received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MA from Cambridge College/Antioch. For 15 years, he taught in the Philadelphia school system. He a life-long summer resident of Maine and in 1983 moved here permanently. He is a member of the New England Sculpture Association (NESA). “In my work, I use wood, steel, found wood, and latex. I also do bronzes. I try to capture, in birds, for instance, either the subject’s extreme stillness (a heron fishing) or it’s opposite. I find the best way to express a bird’s edginess on a limb or briskness in flight is by rough, almost blurred outlines, similar to a sketch, rather than smooth finishes. My work is stylized, but the subject is never unrecognizable. A source of inspiration for me is the 18th Century animal miscellanies depicting creatures drawn by artists whose sole knowledge of their subjects came, not from actual sighting but from hearsay, folklore, and in some cases a desire to amuse or terrify.” – James Rivington Pyne

A Little Night Music 8 x 8 Oil on Linen

Morning-Song 8-x-8 Oil on Linen

“I am inspired by the interplay of light on the landscape, which is ever elusive and always changing. Painting softly allows me the opportunity to recreate that one extraordinary moment when the land, light, and atmosphere seamlessly fuse. Reflecting a serendipitous moment in time can be, however, a deceivingly slow and deliberate process. My work in oils involves applying layers upon layers of paint and is highly influenced by my early classical training– particularly the study of light on form.  Each landscape is painted in transparent layers with sometimes up to 40 layers of paint to recreate the subtle play of light on the landscape as well as to control the incremental changes in tonality.”

“I’m painting what I love; what grabs my attention and makes me pause. Mornings and evenings are particularly inspirational because colors can be intensified, and light can make the ordinary interesting. Boats, whether for work or play, merge with the seascape. And coastal trees stand out like resolute figures, and I appreciate their determination. “
