“I’m most pleased when my paintings evoke smiles. Humor is an element too often missing in art. Having returned to painting relatively late in life, I now understand that Art need not be earth-shakingly profound. Putting together a collection of lines, shapes, and colors that add some order, brightness, and humor to a world too often crazy, dreary and grim is not an unworthy pursuit or insignificant achievement. Enjoy.”

Magical Green Man, Acrylic on Ceramic with Found Items, 20.5 x 14 x 7″
Beauty Moment Meditation, Acrylic on Ceramic with Found Items
Sea Beach Meditation, Ceramic, Acrylic with Loose Objects, 9.5 x 6.5 x 3.75″

I build my ceramic sculptures by using coil and slab techniques which makes them hollow inside. I use an electric kiln to vitrify the clay. The sculpture’s unique surfaces are created by applying layer-a-upon-layer of acrylic paint glaze. This accumulation of multi-layered translucent color gives depth and luminosity and makes them appear more life-like to me. This is also my approach in my two-dimensional work, employing layering and overpainting that often includes collage. Again, for me, this technique most closely expresses my experience of life with all its accumulation, mystery, and emotion.

Painting in Maine presents an ongoing drama of incredible landscapes and seascapes in just about any weather imaginable.

“I am a scavenger and an iron hound. Since I was a child, rusty iron remnants discarded by past lives have lured me. Old beds and cars and other rotting, wonderful iron carcasses call out to me. They are rich in history and speak of, perhaps, a more physical but simpler way of life. I love the color and texture of rust, especially when combined with stone and wood. I love that nature has changed these objects in its process of reclaiming them. After I find these special objects. I continue their metamorphosis in my studio. Sometimes I know right away how I will incorporate them into my sculpture and sometimes they sit with me for years.”

Kennebunk River 12×12 Oil on Canvas

I work in layers, adding paint, scraping off, often mixing the colors directly on the canvas. Being extremely tactile, I often paint with my bare hands. I find that I simplify more and more. There are so much clutter and noise surrounding us – by paring down to the bare essentials, I can breathe. The spaces in between…where nothing happens, are almost more important. It puts the rest into perspective. I am working towards my paintings being a mental pause for the viewer. If I suggest half the story, the rest is up to them. I spend a lot of time meditating. Therefore, approaching the same subject over and over becomes like a meditative process. Every time I try to get a little bit closer to the essence of the soul of the subject.

“My most important accomplishments have been in the last 5 years. My epiphany occurred when I was asked to make an olive tray for a local gift shop. Not seeing it as much of a challenge, I procrastinated until their third request. I returned to my studio and reluctantly rolled out a small thin slab of clay, folded it into a simple tray, and joined the ends. I stared at it in dismay and disgust at this waste of my awesome talent. I held the pod in my hands then the AH-HA moment occurred. The clay spoke, and in a meek shy voice it said, “I want to be a boat”. Ever since that moment, I am a devoted (clay) boat builder. I have since been told that my boats have sailed the continent.” – David Riley Peterson

Shelter Cove 20×20 Oil on Canvas

As with anything, art is a process, and my recent work represents how it has evolved. One of the hardest things as an artist is to find a voice in your work. I spent a long time focusing on replicating things that I saw rather than truly seeing them through an artistic eye. My work now is based on an initial idea or vision, I still will use some references in the process, but my most successful moments in painting happen when I lose that security and the work are coming from within. Adding, editing, allowing color interaction to happen, letting the painting take its own direction…that’s when I truly emerge as an artist.

Rust + Reflections I 5×5 Oil on Canvas with Gold Leaf Edge.

Rust-Reflections-II 5×5 Oil on Canvas with Gold Leaf Edge

Rust-Reflections-III 5×5 Oil on Canvas with Gold Leaf Edge

Painting for me is both an extension and outgrowth of and a form of expression of this love of the land that I roamed as a boy and young man through the cornfields near home or the idle summer afternoons spent gazing at the wondrous forms the winds shaped for our joy and pleasure if we took the few moments time to look up at the skies, to reach for the skies with our soul in the process, literally and metaphorically and be completely in and of the moment, chewing on a stalk of wild grass picked from a field along the way, tasting the bittersweet juice. I try to convey this sense of place, of The American Place, whether it is a farm barn pasture field with a working barn or a lobster shack along a wharf at the rugged rocky coast of Maine or a once fish shack weathered that now serves as a summer residence at the water’s edge for some lucky person or family on the soft hot sandy beaches of Cape Cod. I try to convey that moment of joy and presence through the scenes of my paintings, without intention for nostalgia or sentimentality, realizing though that those elements are inherent in those ancient subjects, giving our imaginations a bit of free reign to roam like the clouds, wondering who has lived and worked here and how their lives were along the way, how different and how the same as yours and mine.

In all of my work, the light is critical to the feeling. After taking photographs on walks around her neighborhood or local trails, she comes back to her studio. This is where the magic happens. Starting with a dark canvas, or negative space, she builds up by adding light. The result is a stained glass image that is both abstract and representational.

Paths, trees, branches, color, light, air, open space, water; we have it all here in Maine. Whether it’s looking up at trees in our suburban neighborhoods, driving down country highways, or walking trails to the lakes, streams, and sea, we have a visual peace and quiet within reach. We can find calm and beauty right along the road almost anywhere in Maine.
