Whitaker Celebration at Maine Art

On Saturday, July 29th we commemorated ten years working with Lyman Whitaker and his amazing kinetic Wind Sculptures. The gallery on Western Ave was filled to the brim with new and past customers, happy to have the opportunity to meet the artist behind the sculptures so many have taken home and treasure. We wandered among the sculptures filling Lower Village with a celebration not soon to be forgotten.

We were thrilled to have Lyman Whitaker and his wife, Stacy, join us here in Kennebunk for a couple days.  It had been a few years since their last visit, and they thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the coast of Maine again.

Whitaker’s sculptures have been surrounding both Maine Art Gallery and Maine Art Shows for ten years.  They have become a landmark for Lower Village, Kennebunk and a wonder for tourists and locals alike. From three feet to twenty-eight feet tall, our “Wind Forest” is filled with all forty-four styles in multiple sizes.

Whitaker is widely respected for the sophistication of his Wind Sculptures. Since the 1980’s he has focused his artistic ability on gracefully capturing the spirit of the wind through his kinetic art. Together with his wife Stacy and brother John, he has built a creative partnership based on complementary talents. Lyman dedicates his work to the wind and weather. He hopes above all that his sculptures will inspire love for our earth’s thin, moving layer of air – it warms us, gives us breath and sustains our being

If you haven’t been to Kennebunk or haven’t visited in a while, please come see us and spend some time among the sculptures. It is a lovely way to spend some of your time in Maine. FMI visit http://kennebunkportwindsculptures.com or call the gallery at 207-967-2803.

Twenty Years Deserves Twenty Days – 20th Anniversary of Maine Art

“Twenty years deserves twenty days,” says John Spain, owner of Maine Art.

Maine Art Paintings and Sculpture is marking twenty years of fine art in the Kennebunks with their 20th Anniversary Show. Thirty-three artists, past and present, are honoring this accomplishment with one-of-a-kind pieces to commemorate the occasion. The show opens on July 22nd at Maine Art Shows and will run through August 10th.

The artists at Maine Art are some of the finest in the area. Each has a distinctive style, but all have a connection to Maine. Amy Lewia, Gallery Director, is excited about the extensive collection of work, but for her it is more. “This show has a lot of meaning, and we love the idea of bringing all of these artists together to celebrate with us, sharing new work alongside memories from the last twenty years.”

David Witbeck

Natalie Lane, the Gallery Manager, agrees with Lewia wholeheartedly. “We have, and have had, an incredible amount of talent here. It will be exciting to see the works of present and past artists together under one roof.” Many mediums and styles will be represented. Sculpture to canvas, acrylic to oil, and abstract to absolutely everything else. “It will certainly make for an impressive show,” says Lane.

Maine Art has two galleries here in Kennebunk. Maine Art Paintings and Sculpture, at 14 Western Avenue, and Maine Art Shows, found up the hill at 10 Chase Hill Road. Each will be hosting events throughout the three-week period. Artist visits are scheduled, demonstrations will take place at both galleries, and artist talks are planned on-site and at a variety of local businesses.

Gretchen Huber Warren Janis Sanders

“It all begins on July 22 with the biggest opening reception party Maine Art has ever thrown,” says Spain. “There will be music, food, and of course, art.”  The reception will be from 5-7 PM. Additional events are posted on Maine Art’s online calendar. “We have a great deal to be thankful for here. Our goal is to truly celebrate our artists, our customers, and our community every day for these twenty days.”

Spain and his staff have filled the weeks with events for all to enjoy, but his true focus is on the show itself. “This show is important for many reasons, not the least of which is the significance of the work. To commemorate our 20th anniversary we asked each of the participating artists to supply us with that one painting they feel is their best work from the last twelve months,” reminds Spain. “They have delivered.”

When John Spain first came to town in 1991, it was as the new owner of Kennedy Studios, a small gallery focused mostly on framing and prints. In three years’ time, one gallery became two, but it wasn’t until 1997 that he took the name Maine Art. In 2000, he built the new gallery space on Western Avenue, then later branded the two galleries together as one entity.

Susan Wahlrab

“The Kennebunks are an amazing place to visit, but an even greater place to work and live,” says Spain. He gives credit to the support of this community throughout the years as a reason behind his success. “I love it here. It’s home.”

The 20th Anniversary Show will open at Maine Art Shows at 11 AM on July 22nd. The gallery is open 11 AM to 5 PM daily. FMI visit maine-art.com/20th or call 207-967-0049. The online 36o° virtual tour will be available Friday evening on the top of the show page. Click here to view it.

A Growing Gallery – New Works from Our Artists

Welcome to summer in the Kennebunks! What a wonderful beginning to such a beautiful season.  We are in the middle of our third show of the year, Craig Mooney, a Solo Show. The first two, Rebecca Kinkead and the 6th Annual Choice Show were both complete successes. We are just about done filling the fabulous schedule for the 20th Anniversary Show, as well. Be sure to check out the calendar of events. There is something fun and exciting going on every day.

In the meantime, many of our artists are stopping by to drop off new work. We can’t even begin to explain how happy we are to share it. With our season being so short, it is impossible to offer the “show” experience to all of our artists. However, as many of you know, being at Maine Art Paintings and Sculpture is a show in itself.

We would love to highlight just a few for you.

Charles Bluett

Ice and Stone by Charles Bluett The Joy of Floating by Charles Bluett The Good Life by Charles Bluett

Bluett is one of our newest artists. His work is unlike anything else in the gallery. His images are wonderful, and the color and space is even more fabulous in person. Bluett’s goal is to capture the ebb and flow of life, and the light and color of the everyday. The Joy of Floating, Ice and Stones and The Good Life are perfect examples of exactly what he does. Though his work has abstract qualities, they certainly evoke memories.

Trip Park

Gonzo Beach by Trip Park Keep Off the Dunes September Beach

We claim some of the most beautiful beach scenes in all of Kennebunkport, and artwork is the best way to take a piece of the coast home with you. Trip Park has captured small moments of our favorite beach memories in three of his new pieces this summer; Gonzo Beach, Keep Off the Dunes and September Beach. The colors and compositions of these images are extraordinary.

James Rivington Pyne

Pyne is one of our sculptors. Using composite and mixed media, he captures our winged friends perfectly.  Wether it be 18 Bee-Eaters, 3 Stilt Sandpipers or Warrier Penguins VII, Pyne’s work is original and captivating, especially for our bird lovers.

Alex Dunwoodie

October Marsh Evening by Alex Dunwoodie Small Whelk on Blue by Alex Dunwoodie Pink Stripe by Alex Dunwoodie

The work of Dunwoodie has such a photographic quality. With images like October Marsh Evening, a second look is needed to see the brush strokes and detail. As in Small Whelk on Blue, many of her works recreate the little things and capture memories and moments held by them. Her water pieces, like Pink Stripe, convey the sensation of water, light and motion depicting a time of day, a sensation, and again, that one special moment.

Sandra L. Dunn

Red, Green and Gold by Sandra Dunn Headless by Sandra Dunn Five Gold Pears by Sandra Dunn

Dunn creates paintings that range from realistic, old master style, to more modern impressionistic pieces. This summer she has added a few still life paintings that truly capture the light and shadow of her subjects. Red, Green and Gold, Headless and Five Gold Pears show, in detail, the skill Sandra brings through her brush.

Karen McManus

5 O'Clock Ferry by Karen McManus Evening Sail by Karen McManus Gull Friend by Karen McManus

Karen has been with Maine Art for many years. She works in watercolor and oil, but always with the landscapes of her home.   5 O’Clock Ferry, Evening Sail and Gull Friend all capture a different piece of Maine, but each are quintessential images that hold time and place in a way we love here on the coast. McManus combines realistic detail with the imagery created by color and light and gives each painting a life of it’s own.

Meet the Staff – Ryan Cadigan

For those of you that have been in and around Maine Art for a while, Ryan Cadigan’s face is not a new one. Ryan first came to work for us in the summer of 2008. “I did my undergrad at Hamilton College and worked at Maine Art all four summers during that time,” says Cadigan. “Now that I am back in New England for grad school it seemed like a good idea to come back and join the gallery team again.” In the photo below a much younger Ryan, left, helps install some of the first Lyman Whitaker Wind Sculptures.

Ryan Cadigan, John Spain, Dave Stone, Lyman Whitaker, and John Spain  (left to right).

Ryan with Lyman Whitaker and John Spain during sculpture installation.

Born in Portland, Maine and raised in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, Ryan has the distinction of being a local. Even though he has lived in New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut and California, Maine is still the place he calls home. “I went to Hamilton College in New York. I received my BA in English and Creative Writing with a minor in Environmental Studies in 2011,” says Cadigan. “Now I am a University of New Hampshire Creative Writing MFA candidate and entering my second year.”

When Ryan called and said he was going to be back in the area and wondered if we had a need for him at the gallery, we jumped at the chance to have him join us, even if it is only for the summer. “Once I finish my masters I want to live abroad,” says Cadigan. He also has a few other aspirations. “Writing is in my future. Books and screenplays to be specific. I also would love to teach college-level writing & English.” In addition to writing and teaching, environmental conservation has been a lifelong passion of Cadigan’s, and one he hopes to weave back into his professional work sometime in the future.

“I am an environmental activist. If I can blend that love with work, I would be happy,” Cadigan says. He has experience in grant writing, digital marketing and copywriting.

Outside of work, writing and school, Ryan is most likely to be practicing yoga, meditation or martial arts, hobbies to help keep him focused and healthy in both mind and body.

Ryan is intelligent and extremely well-spoken. This makes him a wonderful part of our sales staff here at the gallery. His sense of humor and love of sarcasm are part of his charm. He does take lunch very seriously. We are aware of this and try our best to keep his appetite – for new food, as well as new people and stories – satisfied.

We are thrilled to have Ryan back for the summer. He has big plans and we are excited for him to continue to grow and learn. “I love the sun and the ocean, and one day I’d like to swim with whales and live on a house boat,” says Cadigan. “But my big dream is to see my name in the opening credit roll of a movie or the spine of a novel. That would be fantastic.”

Ryan Cadigan

Ryan has committed to being with us for the summer season. After that we shall see. If you are out and about in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, stop in and say hello. The gallery opens at 10 am every day. Check the website for seasonal hours.

“Celestial” by Craig Mooney – An Ode to William

Craig Mooney has a variety of motifs he is known for. We love his skies, sails and coastlines. Normally, each motif is focused on separately. There was a special inspiration, however, that nudged him into bringing three of his favorites into one piece.

Celestial by Craig Mooney

“In my mind, the cornerstone of this show is the piece I originally called Ode to William. It is an ode to William Trost Richards, the 19th century maritime painter,” says Mooney about the piece now named Celestial. “Trost had a distinctive style and was specially known for waves crashing on beaches.”

Richards’ work is much more realistic and detailed than Mooney’s, but the inspiration is obvious for those familiar with Richards’ work. When speaking about a particular painting of Richards’, Mooney said, “It was so interesting. His piece looked like three different paintings I had done in the past, but they were combined into one canvas.” It was a combination of a sailboat, a large cloud with light hitting, and a rocky shore. “Richards’ captured light beautifully. It is the first piece I thought of doing for the show.”

Ode to William was soon renamed Celestial, but the inspiration stayed with Mooney throughout his work for his summer show at Maine Art.

Celestial is a little more tightly controlled and more detailed than my normal work. It began an ever-changing journey into subject matter for this show,” says Mooney. “The next few pieces were more expressive and abstract, but Richard’s work stayed with me throughout.”

Craig Mooney Opens at Maine Art

Artist Craig Mooney is stepping back to a time when art was an escape.

“People are always going to be in search of love. People are always going to be in search of adventure. People are always going to be in search of an escape,” says Mooney. “This show gives them all three.”

Celestial by Craig Mooney

Maine Art Shows is hosting Craig Mooney’s one-man show beginning July 1st. This show will run for three weeks and contain not only his classic semi-abstract seascapes and landscapes, but also some fabulous new figurative works.

Mooney says, “In this time and age we are entering, people are looking for an escape. This new series of work offers that. My recent works are more romantic motifs. I want to give people a place to go for a bit of peace. It’s that feeling found when spending time with a painting, then suddenly it captures you. It holds on, and you are there, even if only for a while. It’s more than just seeing it, it is feeling it. The work has to be sincere.”

Dory Calm by Craig Mooney Surf Riders by Craig Mooney

Born and raised in Manhattan, Mooney left the city in 1988 to attend Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, where he received a fine arts degree in 1992.  He secured his first large commissioned work from New York Hospital in 1995. “The work for the hospital turned into a series of works and more commissioned pieces for Cornell Medical College,” says Mooney. “Thanks in part to this early success, I was able move to rural Vermont and set up a studio.”

He is inspired by all the places he has called home – his native New York, the mountains and farms near his studio in Stowe, Vermont, and the beaches of Maine and Massachusetts where he spends as much time as he can.  Mooney imbues these semi-abstract renderings of place with emotions he feels are universal and timeless. “I love my studio in Vermont, but with all the time I spend in Kennebunk and the weekends I spend with family on Cape Cod, I have become a ‘coastal painter.’ I am not sure when it happened, but it is part of who I am now,” says Mooney.

The romance of his landscapes is also found in his figures. Amy Lewia, Maine Art’s Gallery Director, notes, ”I’m very excited about presenting some new imagery in this solo show. His figurative works and cityscapes are absolutely breathtaking, and we can’t wait to share more of them with our customers.”

Craig Mooney

Mooney looks forward to discussing his work and his process during his Artist Reception on Saturday, July 1st, from 5 to 7 PM.  This show runs though Thursday, July 20th. Maine Art Shows is at 10 Chase Hill Road and is open from 11AM to 5PM daily. If you can’t make it to town, please visit the show online by clicking here.
