Bethany Harper Williams – Three Views of Maine

“I have always been captivated by lobster boats, and lobster boats are ubiquitous in Maine, providing me with lots of inspiration. There is a charm to the shapes and bright colors that give each boat a unique personality. I should call these collages portraits as I’m trying to portray the character of the individual boats.”

Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns, and colors create a visual composite of energy and calm, taking the viewer away from the reality of the image and triggering a personal memory, a moment in time. A low horizon line or the playful placement of simple figures brings context to the expressive composition of color and texture.

It’s Where You Look and How You See – Artist Insights from Bethany Harper Williams

“There are few things I tried to focus on as I worked on this show. I became much more aware of ‘from where’ and ‘how’ I looked at things. I found myself studying the same things from a different angle,” shares Bethany.  “ A great deal of the time, I tried to look beyond or past or through. Whether it was ordinary objects, house, people, or even shapes.”

By taking the landscape and simplifying it, my aim is to capture a memory without the details of representation. The expanse of nature, be it the sky, beach, or water, provides an opportunity to abstract the elements through expressive brushstrokes, subtle textures, and simple forms. Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns, and colors create a visual composite of energy and calm, taking the viewer away from the reality of the image and triggering a personal memory, a moment in time. A low horizon line or the playful placement of simple figures brings context to the expressive composition of color and texture.

White House Blue Roof – Bethany Harper Williams Fall Favorite on Maine Art Hill

“Part of the new series I’ve been exploring, Near and Far,  is where I crop off something large and usually graphic in the foreground, then have some detail that pulls the eye to the background,” explains artist Bethany Harper Williams. “I love the contrast of the bold, architectural, graphic, simplistic feel of the house with the serene, calm feel of the water and the activity of the kids on the beach.”

Happiness in Color on Canvas – A Summer Show at Maine Art Hill

“The broad palette of color and layer upon layer of brush strokes make this show a breath of fresh air in itself,” says John Spain, owner of Maine Art Hill in Kennebunk. “All three artists have captured summer and Maine in paint. Three rooms, three artists. Each artist has a distinct and separate space at the gallery where they are featuring their new works, yet all three culminate into true coastal magic.”
