Plus, it feels a little naughty to run your hands across the surface, like a small child doing something you probably shouldn’t be doing. The depth of the pieces Roberts creates, sometimes fifteen or more layers of wax, allows her to occasionally embed bits of ancient ephemera like ship-captains letters or bits of mica, birch bark or other treasures one might find along the coast.
8th Annual Choice Art Show and Block Party 2019
This year we began with seventy-eight original works from thirteen artists; six pieces each. Then, as most of you know, this is where the process begins. Between the artist, local designer Louise Hurlbutt from Hurlbutt Designs, and you the voters, the show was curated down to three pieces from each artist. These three were carefully “chosen” to be in the show, and we so appreciate all the help we had making these difficult decisions. The three choices for each artist were just as arduous this year as in the past.

My goal is to represent the essence of Maine coastal waters in encaustic painting, by capturing scenes from the coastline of Southern Maine and translating them into vibrant representations of movement and color. Through layering and sculpting of the medium, I create depth and intrigue. My hope is to spark memories and longings for Maine’s rugged shores in the hearts and eyes of the viewer.
