In all of my work, the light is critical to the feeling. After taking photographs on walks around her neighborhood or local trails, she returns to her studio. This is where the magic happens. Starting with a dark canvas or negative space, she builds up by adding light. The result is a stained glass image that is both abstract and representational.

All of Maine – Artist Insights from Liz Hoag
“I also like to interact with local scenes; wooded paths, Maine’s beautiful coastline, or working waterfronts. Whether it’s a coastal scene or a woodland scene,” she explains. “I love the peace that my painting style brings.”
A One Woman Show – Artist Liz Hoag at Maine Art Hill
“I use the woods as a starting point for an abstract idea. Then, by intentionally cropping the view, I consciously retain a substantive structural focal point within the composition,” shares Hoag. “I use other elements that guide the audience to look around the space and return to the focal point. The forms from nature I choose to retain are weighted and colored in a way that makes the viewer feel sure of their footing, feel balanced, feel comfortable.”

8th Annual Choice Art Show and Block Party 2019
This year we began with seventy-eight original works from thirteen artists; six pieces each. Then, as most of you know, this is where the process begins. Between the artist, local designer Louise Hurlbutt from Hurlbutt Designs, and you the voters, the show was curated down to three pieces from each artist. These three were carefully “chosen” to be in the show, and we so appreciate all the help we had making these difficult decisions. The three choices for each artist were just as arduous this year as in the past.
