Craig Mooney – Summer Show Season 2023 – Save the Date

 CRAIG MOONEY

July 8 – August 2

Another must-see save-the-date show. Craig Mooney never disappoints and never ceases to surprise. Come for the fantastic sunsets and skyscapes, and stay for the surprises that continually wow.

This mid-summer show opens at the Gallery at the Grand on Maine Art Hill right after July 4 and runs just into August.

With Mooney, there is a burst of orange light reflecting in both water and sky. The glow of the last rays of the sun is startling, but the process of taking a Mooney painting in is entirely subconscious.

“It demands a step backward, a slight tilt of the head, and begs for the smallest squint to see more clearly: as if looking into something luminous,” shares Mooney. “You must instinctively pull back to be pulled back in. Brush strokes of gold and grey and a faint remnant of sky blue cover the canvas, but it’s the orange. Burnt and bright. Deep and daring.”

It’s all about the light and shadow, the contrast.

Artist Janis Sanders and Northshore Magazine’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards

We love to join in when one of our artists on Maine Art Hill is celebrated for his skill and success. This year Northshore Magazine has recognized Janis Sanders as one of their best. If you have visited the galleries or come to one of Sanders’s many shows, you know why.

Known for his big blue skies and pops of yellow, Sanders recreates what he finds as he wanders New England. Often deserted structures or far out-of-the-way shores, he uses the light and shadows of these places in nature to be the focal point of his work.

We are not surprised in any way to learn Sanders has been recognized. More so, we want to help him along a bit more. With this, we are asking you to take a moment and give him your vote. All the links and information are below.

Janis Sanders is eligible for a @northshoremag #BONS2023 Award! Go here to vote for him: nshoremag.com/bons-2023

For Sanders, one dominant theme growing up was a tremendous, mainly unspoken, sense of bonding and loyalty. “My blue skies are not just a pretty thing, but for me, they come from the need for a place to escape and also soar. I take pleasure in common, small, everyday things: what I paint, what I say, what I think, what I feel, who I am,” says Sanders. “I am thankful each day for even the smallest of things. Especially the big blue sky,” says Sanders. “I am so lucky to engage in this incredible endeavor.”

The Janis H. Sanders Summer Show is at one of our new show galleries at Studios at Maine Art Hill, 5 Chase Hill Rd. The show runs from August 19 to September 6 and is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. FMI call 207-967-2803. The show can be viewed online at www.maine-art.com/shows. See the PREVIEW on August 16 and the VIRTUAL TOUR on the evening of August 18. There is also an Artist Receptions on August 19,  5-7 PM

William B. Hoyt – Summer Show Season 2023 – Save the Date

 WILLIAM B. HOYT

June 24 – July 19

Mary Day and Louis B. French at Sunset

Please save the date for William B. Hoyt’s summer show beginning in June, running through the 4th of July weekend and continuing until July 19. Promises of his realistic renderings of New England are sure to bring fans both local and from away. If all that is not enough, Margaret Gerding is showing right next door!

“Both artists have strong ties to Maine, having visited or lived here for years. As a result, they capture the true essence of the state,” says gallery owner John Spain. “Hoyt celebrates the incredible precision of his paintbrush, whereas Gerding’s strokes are looser and less defined. Yet magic happens in full color when the two come together to represent our state.”

Rounding Bass Head Light

Hoyt can fly by the seat of his pants like a few others. Usually, he works from a variety of images he takes with his camera as he travels. Yet he still embraces the moment and absorbs all he can from each experience that may wander across his path.

“I love to paint outside occasionally, but I always travel with a camera. It’s where my inspiration comes from through the winter. However, a few years back, I  had just mounted a big show for  Maine Art and had spent the months prior in my studio, where I had been doing mostly larger works,” said Hoyt. “It was during this time I was also traveling, and I happened upon a perfect spot to set up my easel. This is  just the thing to recharge my batteries.”

If you love Hoyt’s work or are looking for a piece for your home, mark your calendars for a summertime visit to Kennebunk.

Margaret Gerding – Summer Show Season 2023 – Save the Date

MARGARET GERDING

June 24 – July 19

Granite Point

You have to save the date when a fantastic local artist recreates the landscapes that inspire visitors and tourists alike. Margaret Gerding’s show is a must-see beginning in June, running through the 4th of July weekend and continuing until July 19. If all that is not enough, William B. Hoyt is showing right next door!

Timber Point Edge

“Offering the marsh, ocean, woods, and rocks, Timber Point is one of my favorite places for painting,” shares Gerding. “It also holds an emotional attachment for me…. vacationing in Maine as a child, and it was a ‘rite of passage’ to be old enough to go to the island during low tide. Somehow being out on that island makes you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the land.”

No matter where you roam in southern Maine or where your favorite spot is, Margaret has been there and painted it. So if you want a small piece of this beautiful state to be present in your home, mark your calendar.

Bethany Harper Williams – Summer Show Season 2023 – Save the Date

Artist Reception June 10,  5-7 PM
Gallery at the Grand
1 Chase Hill Rd. Kennebunk, Maine 04043

June 10 – July 5

Whether painting from her home in Goose Rocks in southern Maine or experimenting in her new New York studio, Bethany Harper Williams always pushes boundaries and tries new things.

A Bright Sunshiny Day

“I don’t like to paint the obvious. I like the viewer to look and find new things like the shapes of colors, textures, playful shapes, and scribbles. The vast areas of sky, beach, or water give me room to play,” says Williams. “When looked at up close, all these interesting and unexpected shapes, subtle textures, and colors are found. Yet it is a sky, beach, or water from a distance.”

Bethany needs the mountains and the ocean just like she needs to paint. This power and energy in nature draw her to paint it continually. “I go into my zone when I am painting. The hours pass by, and I am absorbed. It is the same connection as when surrounded by mountains or looking out to the water. I am at peace,” says Williams.

Lyn Asselta – First Show of the Season 2023 – Save the Date

LYN ASSELTA

May 27 – June 21

Our opening show is not only celebrating two new spaces at Studios, but we are also celebrating a “new to us” artist, Lyn Asselta. Her show will open and run alongside Liz Hoag. We love the vibe these two talented ladies create. Side by side, they are fabulous.

Asselta is a pastel artist with twenty-five years of experience in the arts. However, she didn’t begin focusing on pastels until she opened an old box of Grumbacher pastels. She never looked back. Being drawn to locations with a rugged, solitary strength, she loves places with untold stories where she can lose herself in the nature surrounding her. Pastel allows Lyn to hold a piece of color in her hand and to capture the essence of the wild, untouched beauty she finds in the world.

2023 Save the Date for Maine Art Hill Shows

2023 Season

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are so excited to welcome in 2023.

As we look back on an incredibly successful 2022, we need to thank our incredible staff, crazy creative artists, and of course, you, our clients, both new and lifelong. We are still amazed at all we accomplished in the past year and can’t wait to bring in the new and exciting, and old and still exciting events for 2023.

Our most significant change for the 2023 Summer Show Season is the change in location for our show galleries. We are maintaining the Gallery at the Grand for another summer with a few tweaks to make the experience much smoother and more beautiful. However, Shows on Maine Art Hill is moving. The Gallery at the well-loved old captain’s house at the top of Chase Hill Road is moving down the hill to 5 Chase Hill Road, the home of  Studios on Maine Art Hill, right next door to our frame shop. Here you will find two, yes two, new show gallery spaces. There will be more on the “Grand Opening” this spring.

Also, just a reminder, we are still doing our best to remain paperless. We are sending each of you already on our mailing list a SAVE THE DATE card soon, but that will be our only “mailed” contact. So please save the card as well as the dates. In turn, we have established a common way to connect with each of you and keep everyone in the loop. To ensure this, please, update your contact info. If you have moved or changed phones, don’t hesitate to send us a note to let us know. You may also want to follow us on Facebook and Instagram. (Click any of these links to ensure you are following us.)

Adrienne Kernan LaVallee – A Spring Pop-Up on Maine Art Hill

Adrienne Kernan LaVallee

June 1 -14

The Gallery

14 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, Maine

“I am a native New Englander whose family began vacationing in Maine when the Maine State Turnpike opened in the early 1960s. As an adult, I lived much of the time in neighboring New Hampshire and continued the tradition of spending time here during the summer. Finally, twelve years ago, becoming a Maine resident became a reality when we bought a house with a right-of-way to Biddeford Pool. For the first time, I began experiencing coastal Maine’s four seasons and the changes that time brings.

As a painter, I use oil paint almost exclusively. I loved it at age three when I got into my father’s paints and saw the hardwood floor and my body as perfect vehicles for expression. If I close my eyes, I still hear my mother’s scream. That introduction has stayed with me. Today I love pushing and pulling oil paint around my canvas. Expressive, abstract explorations of the landscape excite me, particularly that of New England and Maine’s coast.

My aesthetic influences are artists who create or have created dynamic work. Twentieth Century art movements, such as Italian Futurism and Abstract Expression, have been important to my studio practice. Artist heroes include David Alfaro Siquerios, Yves Klein, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Jane Freilicher, Fairfield Porter, and contemporary painters Lois Dodd, Anselm Kiefer, and Julie Mehretu. Lastly, my Dad (1922-2010) hung up his suit and ties in 1986 ad painted full-time. He exhibited until the week he died and will always be a hero, although our philosophies on art were quite different.

Being passionate about painting means one can work anywhere because a painter must paint. I have worked in old mills, borrowed studios, kitchens, corners of living and dining rooms, on patios, in spare bedrooms, garages, and in tents! My huge dream studio was built in Lenox, MA, in 1994. But life has changed, and now I have two smaller studios. A winter studio in my well-lit basement and my current dream studio in a 14′ x 16′ high vaulted ceiling “she-shed” in my yard, where you’ll find me from April to the end of October.

As a child, I began earnestly attending museum classes and working next to my dad in his studio. Art is a lifelong pursuit; I am always learning. MFA Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore; BFA University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth; summer 1990 & 1992 Richmond College in Firenze, Italy; Workshops with Sigmund Abeles and James Fortune, among others.”
