“I’m most pleased when my paintings evoke smiles. Humor is an element too often missing in art. Having returned to painting relatively late in life, I now understand that art need not be earth-shakingly profound. Putting together a collection of lines, shapes, and colors that add some order, brightness, and humor to a world too often crazy, dreary and grim is not an unworthy pursuit or insignificant achievement. Enjoy.”

“Man’s integration with and interdependence with nature was clear to me at an early age with the immersion in the agricultural environment a stone’s throw from home,” shares Janis Sanders. “This gave me an early foundation and appreciation for the bounties that surround us in the natural environment.”

Janis Sanders has always found his inspiration from the outside world and how it interacts with man and the objects we build. His stunning use of the sky and light combined with structures and vessels has become his signature.

He explains it best when he said, “My self-assigned task for each work, is to convey the ethereal ‘thing’ of light in the paint, as the sun casts its breath on the world, a definite sky and subsequent horizon line define space. Each painting for me begins with the sky, it is like a curtain that is the backdrop for a vast stage.”

2022 Spring Arrivals

These are the four newest spring arrivals from artist Craig Mooney. We feature these four unique paintings this week, April 4 – 10. Click the link below to find the details on each of these pieces. Any or all of these paintings purchased this week are subject to free shipping*.

Craig has been lucky enough to experience places where skies change from orange to pink to blue in a day, where seas reflect dark and grey, and in just a moment change to crystal blue, where land, sky, and ocean converge to produce a perfect contrast of nature. These places are familiar to us. We live here. We have created memories here.

“Before this show, I went back over the last ten years,” says Craig. “I discovered the paintings where people felt connected. But, over and over, it was the sky and the sea.” So Craig revisited these works, creating new and original pieces that hold the same familiar feeling – a feeling we are just not quite ready to let go of.

It is the juxtaposition of light that inspires Karen’s realistic works. Each painting is an individual mental puzzle to be worked through. Combining realistic detail with the imagery created by color and light gives each painting a life of its own. Her miniatures offer a microscopic view of the broader vision surrounding us. Painting in Maine presents an ongoing drama of incredible landscapes and seascapes in just about any weather imaginable.

“Some would argue that a painting, just by being a painting, is automatically abstracted to a small degree, no matter how hyper-realistic it is. My work falls on the abstraction scale somewhere, sure, but where doesn’t matter to me. Tasteful expression matters to me; strong composition and accurate drawing matter to me; mixing color with integrity matters to me. Fussy, overworked, lifeless paintings bore me something dreadful. An artist can be anything but boring. They say that no paintings are ever finished, just abandoned. The trick is to know when to walk away.”

These are the four newest spring arrivals from artist Susan Bennett. We are featuring these four amazing paintings this week, March 28 – April 3. Click the link below to find the details on each of these pieces. Any or all of these paintings purchased this week are subject to free shipping*.

Susan Bennett is one of the talented artists at The Works, one of six galleries at Studios on Maine Art Hill. She is an accomplished sculptor who has always called Maine home. Working mainly with steel and carbon steel she creates abstract sculptures representing her views of nature.

Artistically, I have focused on material that I understand on a technical level. Steel and stainless steel are heavy, solid materials. My intent has been to dispel these impressions, giving the metal qualities of motion and weightlessness. This study, somewhat subversive to the traditional treatment of this mean material, transforms it into a sculpture that gives consideration to an integrated and instinctive process.

These are the three newest spring arrivals from artist Liz Hoag. We are featuring these three amazing paintings this week, March 21 – 27. Click the link below to find the details on each of these pieces. Any or all of these paintings purchased this week are subject to free shipping*.

“In all of my work, the light is critical to the feeling.” After taking photographs on walks around her neighborhood or local trails, Liz returns to her studio. This is where the magic happens. Starting with a dark canvas or negative space, she builds up by adding light. The result is a stained glass image that is both abstract and representational.

Paths, trees, branches, color, light, air, open space, water; we have it all here in Maine. We have a visual peace and quiet within reach, whether it’s looking up at trees in our suburban neighborhoods, driving down country highways, or walking trails to the lakes, streams, and sea. We can find calm and beauty right along the road almost anywhere in Maine.

“I get inspiration from many sources, including the changing colors, patterns, and atmospheres of the landscape around me and the random idea generator that is my imagination. In each painting, I am searching for an elegant balance of spare compositions over large fields of luminous color. When observing everyday subjects such as shells, I try to pay attention to the small spaces between them and the abstract patterns created by their characteristic colors.” -Ellen Welch Granter.

Spring is Almost Here and That Means 2022 Spring Arrivals!

Spring is upon us once again, thank goodness, and we at Maine Art Hill are aware our visitors are ready to open windows and enjoy the sunshine. Two years ago, we began a campaign called Spring Arrivals. This campaign has been so successful it is now part of our yearly calendar.

The longer, darker, colder winter days are when artists are at their best. They create, paint, sculpt and find inspiration in the craziest of places. However, when spring comes,  it holds a different kind of excitement. It means it’s time to bring all the newly created pieces to the gallery, and experience tells us these paintings and sculptures represent some of the most impressive works.

So once again, we invite you to share in the excitement.

Spring Arrivals

Every Monday, beginning March 21,  we will send everyone on our email list a note. This email will feature two to three artists and their new “Spring Arrivals”  and will continue through May, featuring different artists each week.

You can also follow along on Facebook and Instagram. Watch for social media posts on  Mondays and Thursdays highlighting the week’s artists and learn a little more about them.

Any purchases from the featured weeks are eligible for free shipping* when purchased by the following Sunday.

Who will these artists be? Which pieces of work?

We aren’t telling! You will have to wait until the email comes or follow us on social media! Don’t you love the anticipation!

How do you do that?

Join our email list to learn which artists are participating that week! BTW…the link is on the bottom right of our home page.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Ryan Kohler Solo Show 2022

Ryan Kohler

August 13 – Sept 8

MAINE ART HILL

Maine Art Hill, Kennebunk. Maine

Ryan Kohler is one of the newest artists to join Maine Art Hill. In just a few years, he has established a serious following. Clients come from all over to see his latest works, and they rarely stay with us long before shipping them off to their forever homes.

His process has evolved over the time Kohler has been with us and watching the progress has been a genuinely fascinating endeavor.

“My process is evolving a little bit. The main meat and potatoes of my work are still painting and continue to be acrylic paint, but I’m starting to incorporate the use of tape and markers and objects,” Kohler explains. “I’m treating my canvas like a collage with more emphasis on the painting than the collage part.”

Many of Kohler’s works have a mixed media component, so this idea is not new. Regarding the addition of papers, each of his recent pieces demonstrates different levels of this aspect. Some are more extreme than others. In addition, these pieces are even more attractive in person. Seen from close-up provides a different experience than from a distance—all the more reason to visit the gallery. We have several new works from Kohler that will show you what to expect from his summer show.

Until then, be sure to mark your calendars and plan a wander up to The Gallery at The Grand at 1 Chase Hill Road in Kennebunk, Maine.
